A cluster of moody righthand reef-and-point breaks tucked into the Osa Peninsula, roughly 18km SW of Puerto Jimenez, Matapalo fires when a solid SSW or SW swell lines up with light E winds at low to mid tide. Best size runs head-high to triple overhead, and when conditions converge the rides can stretch well past 150m. Intermediate surfers can find their feet at the mellower inside points, but the outer breaks demand solid paddling fitness and experience reading heavy, rocky lineups. Underwater boulders on the inside are the main hazard. Bottom: mixed sand and rock. Season: May through October. Consistency: fickle but capable of exceptional days when swell tracks right. Come prepared to wait out river crossings during heavy rain, and bring enough supplies since food and accommodation options are sparse on the peninsula.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are often empty or near-empty. Forecasts rate local vibe 4 out of 5: humility and respect are expected and non-negotiable. Some long-term residents carry territorial attitudes disproportionate to their water ability. Inside points are more relaxed. Around the corner toward the outer breaks, read the lineup before paddling out and defer to those who know the rocks.

Access & Facilities

The 4WD-only road from Puerto Jimenez crosses multiple rivers. During heavy rain those crossings become impassable and you may be stranded until water levels drop. There is basic beachside camping and very limited lodging nearby. One cantina in the area. Puerto Jimenez, roughly an hour away over rough road, is the nearest town for resupply.

Nearby Alternatives

Pavones, further south down the coast, offers more consistent lefts and is worth checking if Matapalo is not cooperating. The Osa Peninsula coast holds additional breaks that activate on different swell angles, so having local knowledge and a flexible schedule pays off here.
