Super-exposed to virtually every swell angle between S and NW, Punta Burica sits at the remote tip of the peninsula bordering Panama, delivering large peaks across a network of submerged offshore reefs that remain largely unexplored. Optimal conditions arrive with S to SW groundswell at 4-10ft, offshore NE winds, and a low to mid tide that pressurizes the reef sections into defined walls and punchy hollow moments. This is expert-only terrain: the combination of exposed offshore location, size potential up to 12ft, and the logistical reality of needing a panga to reach many of the reefs demands experience in heavy, unpredictable water. Crowds are rarely a factor given the access difficulty. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: May to November for S swell, December to March for NW pulses. Consistency: high when a swell is running. Come prepared to be self-sufficient, camping is the only facility, resupply is a long haul, and swollen rivers can cut off road access without warning.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Rarely crowded by Costa Rica standards, mostly because getting there filters out casual surfers. The few people you encounter are likely on the same panga, sharing the same remote mission. Treat the place with respect and keep the vibe cooperative.

Access & Facilities

A sturdy panga is the practical requirement for reaching most of the offshore reefs. Road access toward the broader Burica Peninsula involves rough 4x4 tracks that can be severed by river crossings after rain. Camping is available but bring everything you need. No food, water, or rental infrastructure on site. Hazards are typical of exposed offshore reef: size, current, and distance from shore.

Nearby Alternatives

If Punta Burica is too large or the panga isn't available, the Cabo Matapalo area to the north offers a range of points and reefs including Pan Dulce, which turns into a long Rincon-style right on solid S swell. Playa Carate, near Corcovado National Park, picks up swell when things go flat closer to Matapalo.
