A cluster of reef breaks at the southern tip of Golfo Dulce, roughly 4km south of Pavones, Punta Banco offers both lefts and rights over a mixed sand-and-rock bottom. The peak sits about 200m offshore and needs a south swell to fire, with the window running May through October. Low-to-incoming tide is the move: it cleans up the sections and reduces the danger from the reef ledges and boils that litter the lineup. Intermediate surfers comfortable reading a tricky reef will find this a legitimate escape valve when the more famous point up the road gets overrun. Bottom: mixed reef and sand. Season: May to October. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Pack a helmet or at least a solid leash, because hidden rocks and boils make wipeouts genuinely consequential here.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the genuine benefits of Punta Banco: when Pavones is stacked, this spot typically has far fewer people in the water. Respect the fishing community here and keep a low profile. The tricky paddle-out and shallow reef naturally thin the crowd further.

Access & Facilities

Punta Banco village is about 4km south of Pavones along a rough dirt road. Facilities are minimal. Bring your own water and food. The paddle-out requires reading the boils and reef carefully before committing, especially on a dropping tide. Watch for hidden rocks on the inside section.

Nearby Alternatives

Pavones, 4km north, is the obvious go-to when south swell is pumping and you want longer walls, though expect company. On smaller or more mixed swells, the beach breaks closer to Golfito can offer more forgiving conditions for a session.
