A steep, fast right-hand reef point on the southern tip of the Osa Peninsula, Hog Hole sits at the entrance to the Golfo Dulce and picks up almost any south or west swell that swings through. Optimal winds are offshore from the northeast, and the wave is surfable at any tide, though longer rides open up at high. Intermediate surfers will feel at home here, but be aware that when neighboring Golfo Dulce breaks go flat, this spot absorbs the entire regional crowd into one tight lineup. Bottom: reef over hidden rocks. Season: south swell months, roughly April through October. Consistency: high for the region. Watch your feet and your board on the submerged rock sections, especially on the inside, where a wrong step or a bad fall can end your trip early. Backwash and Pan Dulce are the next two breaks further into the gulf if you need options.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The crowd here is directly tied to conditions elsewhere. When the Golfo Dulce interior spots shut down, every surfer in the area funnels into this lineup, and it gets competitive. Dawn patrol on weekdays is the most reliable window for space. Respect the established pecking order and don't paddle around the peak.

Access & Facilities

The break is near the small community of Matapalo, accessible by dirt road from Puerto Jiménez. The drive is rough and a 4WD is strongly recommended, particularly in the rainy season. Basic amenities are minimal in the immediate area, so bring water and supplies. Watch the reef on entry and exit, as the rocks are not always visible.

Nearby Alternatives

Backwash and Pan Dulce are the logical next stops if Hog Hole is maxed out or overcrowded, both sitting further inside the Golfo Dulce. On bigger south swells, checking the exposed beaches on the outer Osa coast can also yield uncrowded options.
