A sheltered rivermouth sandbar in a deep bay between Angra dos Reis and Paraty, Mambucaba produces long A-frame peaks where the river's sandspit splits the swell into two distinct waves. The left runs like a point break, walling up for 150-300m on a good day, the right is shorter, punchier, and more hollow. A fringing island roughly 200m offshore filters out wind chop and blocks direct swell, meaning the wave only turns on when south swells are powerful enough to wrap through the gap. Best from 1.5m to 2.5m+. The lineup suits intermediate to advanced surfers with limited crowds on weekdays. Bottom: sand. Season: south swell season, autumn through winter. Consistency: fires a handful of times per year. Cold river water keeps the temp down year-round, so pack a light wetsuit even in summer and check swell charts carefully before making the drive.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays can be empty, weekends bring a handful of surfers. Locals are reportedly protective of the peak, so read the lineup before paddling out, sit wide on your first few sets, and earn your position respectfully. Dawn patrol is the smart call on busy days.

Access & Facilities

Mambucaba is roughly three hours from Rio de Janeiro along the Costa Verde. The village is a small colonial settlement with historical character. Drinking water is available near the camping area. The nuclear plant at Angra dos Reis is visible in the background. No surf rentals on site, bring everything you need.

Nearby Alternatives

Angra dos Reis and Paraty both have beach breaks and smaller bay setups that pick up residual swell on smaller days. If the rivermouth sandbar is not cooperating, the Costa Verde coast between the two towns has several exposed beaches worth checking on the same south swell.
