Itamambuca delivers punchy, varied beach-break peaks along a long stretch of open Atlantic coastline roughly 20 km north of Ubatuba, São Paulo state. Best on S to SE swell from 3-8ft with offshore NW winds, though it starts firing well under 3ft and handles overhead-plus surf on bigger days. Mid-tide tends to shape the banks best, but it works across all tides and the wave character shifts noticeably between the northern, central, and southern sections of the beach. Intermediate surfers get the most out of it, though beginners can find gentler corners on smaller days and experienced surfers will appreciate the power when a proper swell arrives. Weekdays the lineup is genuinely quiet, sometimes just a handful of people spread across three distinct peaks. Bottom: sand. Season: March through September for most consistent swell. Consistency: moderate to high. Pack a step-up if a southern groundswell is forecast, because the beach can handle real size and soft boards will get punished.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are relaxed with locals who are generally friendly toward visiting surfers. Weekends, especially during Brazilian school holidays, bring serious crowd pressure from São Paulo, two hours inland. Dawn patrol is the move on a Saturday or Sunday. Localism is low-key but the weekend volume alone can make the lineup competitive.

Access & Facilities

Drive the Rio-Santos highway (BR-101) toward Ubatuba and continue roughly 20 km north of town. The beach is signed from the road and parking is straightforward. No major town at the beach itself, just the coast. Water is warm enough for boardshorts or a light shorty most of the year. Basic amenities exist along the highway corridor.

Nearby Alternatives

Ubatuba itself has multiple breaks spread across its bay that offer shelter on large NE wind swells when Itamambuca closes out. Further north along the Rio-Santos corridor, a string of point and beach breaks can pick up swell at different angles, worth exploring if the banks at Itamambuca aren't cooperating.
