Punchy a-frame peaks break over a rock-sand bottom at Camburi, a beachbreak town about two hours southwest of São Paulo on the Rio-Santos road. S swells light up the lefts. E swells push quality rights off the opposing end, and both peaks run short but hollow, hitting harder than their size suggests. Mid-sized swell from 3 to 8ft is the sweet spot, and the wave works at all tides thanks to a forgiving but uneven mixed bottom. It suits a wide ability range in theory, but the sucky, slabby character on bigger days demands solid experience. Bottom: rock-sand mixed beachbreak. Season: year-round. Consistency: high. Dawn patrol on weekdays is the move, because weekend and holiday crowds pack the lineup hard and attitude surfaces when the surf is on. Pollution runs residential-level, avoid after heavy rain. A small car park and lifeguard service are on site.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Camburi is the most consistent wave in the region, which means São Paulo's inland population treats it as a default weekend destination. Expect a packed lineup on Saturdays, Sundays, and Brazilian public holidays. Locals carry attitude on the better days. The current moves the pack around enough to create breathing room, but go early or go mid-week to avoid the worst of it.

Access & Facilities

Drive the Anchieta highway out of São Paulo then follow the Rio-Santos road, roughly two hours total. Paid car park at the beach. Lifeguards on duty. Restaurants and nightlife along the main road through town. Residential runoff affects water quality after heavy rain, so check before paddling out.

Nearby Alternatives

When Camburi closes out or the crowd is unbearable, head west to Baleia, Barra do Sahy, or Juquei for similar swell windows with fewer bodies in the water. East toward Boiçucanga the shorebreak gets heavier and more bodyboard-oriented. For the best beachbreak in the region when a SE-S groundswell is running, Maresias is worth the extra drive.
