Four distinct peaks packed into a short urban beachbreak make Pitangueiras the most reliable surf in Guarujá, working when everywhere else along the São Paulo coast has gone flat. E through S swells all fire here, with NW offshore winds grooming the faces. Optimal size runs 2-8ft, though it handles up to 10ft before things get messy. The wave suits beginners through intermediates, but expect a fight for every set: this beach is ultra-crowded on weekends and rarely quiet on weekdays. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round. Consistency: high. Arrive early on weekday mornings to find manageable lineups.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Pitangueiras is always busy. Ultra-crowded on weekends, still crowded midweek. Home beach of world champion Adriano de Souza, which adds to the local pride in the lineup. If the crowd at Canal or Ilha is overwhelming, walk toward Maluf at the NE end where the peak is sharper and thins the crowd slightly. Localism is present but not heavy.

Access & Facilities

Direct city beach in central Guarujá, easy to reach by car or public transit with a carpark nearby. Lifeguards on duty. Malls, restaurants, and hotels all within walking distance. Note that the Canal peak fronts a polluted river mouth so water quality there is compromised, especially after heavy rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When Pitangueiras is maxed out or the crowd is unbearable, Asturias just to the south offers easier beachbreak peaks on SE-S swell. For something more structured, Pernambuco to the NE is a consistent, hollow beachbreak worth the short drive.
