A rare, extreme-length beachbreak on São Francisco do Sul Island, Sumidouro only fires on massive East swells that dwarf everything else on the Santa Catarina coast. When PG or Prainha are cresting at 10ft, expect 5-6ft here, and on the biggest days the wave unspools across multiple connecting sections for well over 500m. Swells originating from the east push energy across a flat sand bottom, meaning waves begin peeling far offshore. Longboarders position themselves up to 1km out to catch the earliest sections, while the wave builds in size and power as it marches inward, offering critical barrel sections close to the beach. Low to mid tide produces the best shape. This is a wave for experienced surfers only: the paddle is punishing, the inside current is strong, and when it's on, every surfer on the island is in the water. Bottom: sand. Season: rare, under five days per year. Consistency: extremely low. Bring your fitness.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Ultra crowded on the rare days it fires, with every local surfer on São Francisco do Sul Island converging on the lineup simultaneously. The scarcity makes for intense competition when conditions arrive. Respect is non-negotiable. Know your priority, read the crowd, and don't snake.

Access & Facilities

Park at Praia do Forte near the Brazilian Army fortress, then walk roughly 35 minutes west along the beach. No facilities on site. Bring water, sunscreen, and energy for a long paddle against a strong current. The inside rip demands respect and can catch surfers off guard after long rides.

Nearby Alternatives

When Sumidouro is flat, the more consistent breaks at Prainha or PG on the mainland will be running bigger and are worth the trip. Petrobras Pier is another São Francisco do Sul option that draws the same local crowd on big days.
