A serious hollow right breaks off the rocks at the southern tip of Florianópolis Island, demanding a commitment before you even paddle out. S swells from 90-180 degrees with NW winds are the formula, with the wave holding from 3ft up to a grinding 8ft plus. The access alone filters the lineup: a 40-minute trail hike from the village of Caieira da Barra do Sul, or a hired boat, means you will not find weekend warriors here by accident. Better suited to intermediate-to-advanced surfers given the heavy, close-out-prone nature of the break, although the rivermouth can produce lefts that are more forgiving on smaller days. Bottom: sand over shallow base with rock exposure near the peak. Season: S swell season, autumn through spring. Consistency: medium. Bring a backup board, because snapping one means hiking out early with nothing to show for the mission.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The access barrier keeps crowds genuinely thin. On a working swell you may share the peak with a small group of locals and campers who made the same trek. Respect the quiet nature of the place, carry out all rubbish, and keep the noise down. There is no evidence of heavy localism, but earning your place in the water here is a given.

Access & Facilities

No facilities on the beach whatsoever. Drive to Caieira da Barra do Sul on the west side of the island, park at the end of the road (parking is restricted), and walk the 40-minute coastal trail. Alternatively, hire a boat from the village. Pack water, food, sun protection, and wax. Pollution risk from the estuary and rivermouth is noted, so be aware after rain. Rocks near the takeoff zone are the primary physical hazard.

Nearby Alternatives

When Naufragados is not firing, Lagoinha do Leste offers powerful, uncrowded waves on a similar swell window and is equally remote but rewarding. Matadeiro rivermouth picks up the same S swell with occasional epic lefts, though consistency is a real issue there too.
