Brazil's most consistent beachbreak delivers powerful, often-hollow A-frames on the south end of Florianópolis's Ilha de Santa Catarina. Works on any swell direction from NE through S, any tide, and even onshore sea breezes can't always kill it. NW offshore wind is ideal, size range of 3-12ft keeps it in play year-round, though fall and winter produce the most organised swells. The northern end builds longer lefts off constantly shifting sandbars, while the left corner at Costão (the rocky headland) produces semi-point-style walls best surfed at low to mid tide by experienced hands. A former WCT contest venue, the quality is real, but so is the crowd. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round, peak fall-winter. Consistency: high. When it gets big, the paddle-out becomes a serious physical test with no clean channel, so know what you're getting into before committing to an overhead-plus session here.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is ground zero for surfing on Santa Catarina Island and the lineup reflects that. Weekends and summer school holidays are ultra-crowded. Locals are competitive and can edge toward aggro on good days. Mid-week winter mornings offer the best chance of breathing room. Respect the pecking order, take your time in the lineup, and don't paddle straight to the peak on your first wave.

Access & Facilities

Follow Avenida das Rendeiras and signs to Joaquina. Paid car park on site with security. Facilities include camping options nearby. Water quality is generally clean. On bigger days, currents run strong and other surfers are the main hazard, not the bottom.

Nearby Alternatives

When Joaquina is maxing out or impossibly crowded, Praia Mole offers S-wind protection and softer beachbreaks a short drive north. Galheta, reachable by foot from Mole, trades the crowd for a hike and rewards with hollow, less-contested peaks. Campeche to the south rarely fires but delivers a classic long right when a major S swell arrives.
