A shifting rivermouth sandbar on the southern tip of Florianópolis Island, Matadeiro's left-hander is the best rivermouth wave in Santa Catarina when it lines up. E to S swells from 3 to 8ft push in best on SW offshore winds, with the peak working across all tides but delivering hollow, fast barrels off the main left corner when conditions align. This is an intermediate-to-advanced wave, ultra-crowded on weekends, with one of the heaviest localism scenes in Florianópolis. Bottom: shifting sand over rivermouth. Season: March to August. Consistency: medium, fickle sandbars mean it rarely fires two days running. Surf the right corner if you want to avoid the sharpest local pressure, and do not paddle straight into the main peak without reading the room first.
Weekend crowds are ultra-crowded and localism is genuine. This is not the place to hoot loudly, drop in, or paddle straight to the best peak as a visitor. Surf the right corner, wait your turn, and keep noise down. Weekday dawn sessions reduce both issues significantly. Respect is not optional here.
Park at Armação to the north and walk south to Matadeiro. There are no facilities at the break itself, but Armação has food options and parking. The estuary water carries pollution typical of rivermouths, open wounds and reef cuts are a concern after rain. No hazards beyond the crowd.
When Matadeiro's bar is off, Praia da Armação to the north offers quieter beachbreak peaks. Lagoinha do Leste, reachable by a demanding hike south, delivers powerful, far emptier waves worth the mission when a solid swell is running.
