Protected by steep hills on the east coast of Florianópolis Island, Praia Mole delivers punchy A-frame beach peaks that become the go-to option when southerly winds shut down the rest of the island. E and S swells fill in consistently, with NW offshore winds trimming the faces cleanly. Low to mid tide pulls the best shape from the banks, particularly at the north end where quality peaks form on smaller swells, though rights tend to close out as size builds past overhead. The south corner, known as Gravatá, holds bigger S and SE groundswell and produces a more defined right-hander. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round, with fall and winter producing the best runs. Consistency: medium to good. Rip currents are the main hazard, so read the beach before paddling out, especially when size jumps overnight.
Expect a competitive but generally easygoing lineup. Weekends and swell days pack the water, especially when this is the only spot working under a southerly. Locals are welcoming if you respect the lineup and wait your turn. Dawn patrol significantly cuts the crowd on weekend swells. The vibe is city-beach casual, not heavy, but don't test it.
East side of Florianópolis Island with a car park and camping facilities nearby. Access is straightforward. Water quality is fairly clean. Rip currents form regularly, particularly when swell size lifts, so identify the channels before entering.
Joaquina, a short drive south, is the most consistent and often the highest-quality beachbreak on the island. Galheta, a hike north past the headland, offers hollower peaks with considerably fewer people. When a major S swell arrives, Campeche's long hollow right is worth the check.
