A raw beach break on the Santa Catarina coast that earns comparisons to Puerto Escondido for its shallow, fast barrels, Palmas fires almost exclusively on east swell and occasionally southeast, which keeps it inconsistent but electric when it connects. Optimal conditions are 3-4ft E swell with S, SW, W, or NW offshores at low to mid tide. At 6ft and above the tubes compress over roughly 1m of water, making wipeouts genuinely dangerous. Experienced surfers only. Weekday crowds are manageable, on the right weekend swell, every surfer within driving distance of Florianópolis arrives at once. Bottom: beach. Season: east swell season, typically autumn through winter. Consistency: fickle but memorable. Bring a helmet if you're charging size, and go early before the crowds stack up.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Locals are relaxed as long as you show respect and don't act entitled to waves. The real crowd issue is regional: when Palmas is on, word travels fast and the lineup fills quickly. Weekdays offer a fraction of the weekend pressure. Dawn sessions are your best window. Share waves, be patient, and the vibe stays positive.

Access & Facilities

From Florianópolis head north on BR-101 and follow signs into Gov. Celso Ramos, roughly 18km past the city entrance sign. Turn right after the elementary school to reach the beach. The road is fully paved. The village has a handful of restaurants, a surf shop, minimarkets, and a gas station. No ATMs. Family-oriented town with no nightlife.

Nearby Alternatives

When Palmas is flat or blown out, the Florianópolis breaks to the south offer more consistent swell windows and a wider range of conditions. Spots on the island's south and east coasts pick up similar E and SE energy with more options for different skill levels.
