A shifting sand rivermouth that Brazilians legitimately compare to Uluwatu, Guarda do Embaú sits under a rocky headland on the Santa Catarina coast, about 30 minutes north of Garopaba on the BR-101. SE to ENE swell hits the sand built up at the rivermouth's northeast end and peels into long, precise lefts that behave more like a reef or pointbreak than a beach break. NW wind or calm conditions are the window. It works chest-high through double overhead and can hold bigger, though the shifting bottom means some days reward the patient. Experienced surfers will find the best tubes near the rivermouth corner, intermediates can work the walls further down the beach on smaller swells. Bottom: sand. Season: fall and winter peak, but breaks year-round. Consistency: moderate to high when swell is running. One critical warning: local fishermen, backed by local government, periodically ban surfing from May to July during fish-migration windows. The bans are enforced. You can arrive to pumping, unridden surf and be turned away.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are manageable. Weekends draw large crowds and the lineup turns competitive fast. The local vibe is serious. Paddling out near the left corner is the easy entry, which means everyone uses it. Respect the pecking order, be patient, and don't hassle for sets. Brazilian lineups at known spots reward surfers who carry themselves quietly.

Access & Facilities

Take the BR-101 north from Garopaba, roughly 30 minutes. Access is easy once you're there. The spot sits within a World Surfing Reserve, which means the coastal environment and access are officially protected. Water is generally clean, but the rivermouth runs dirty after heavy rain. Strong rip currents form near the rivermouth at low tide, particularly post-rain. Check the fishermen's ban calendar before making the drive during May to July.

Nearby Alternatives

Garopaba itself has beach break options when Embaú is blown out or banned. Rosa and Ferrugem to the south are worth checking if the swell window is running more S than SE.
