A sand-bottom headland break on Ilha de Santa Catarina, Galhetas rewards the walk with cleaner, less crowded surf than the island's easier-access beaches. East swells are the engine here, wrapping around the granite headland to produce peaky rights and lefts across reasonably stable sandbars. A large SE or S swell can also push waves through, though the headland cuts off the more southerly angles. Best wind is calm to offshore from W to NW. Size works from knee-high to slightly overhead, with the left corner waking up on bigger E swells most common August to November. Intermediate surfers will find the most to work with, but all levels can manage on smaller days. Bottom: sand. Season: Aug to Nov peak, breaks year-round. Consistency: medium. Pack water and snacks for the hike in, and note that between May and June surfing may be prohibited during traditional Tainha fishing season.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The difficult access keeps the lineup mellow relative to the island's more popular breaks. The vibe is welcoming. Dawn patrol or weekday sessions reward the effort with even more space. Expect company on solid E swell days when word gets out.

Access & Facilities

Reach Galhetas by walking north around the headland from Praia Mole. The trail is scenic but takes commitment, especially in size. No facilities on the beach, so carry everything you need. Note the beach has a long-standing naturist culture. Water quality is generally clean.

Nearby Alternatives

Praia Mole, directly south, is the obvious fallback for an easier paddle-out and more consistent beachbreak action across swell directions. When bigger S or SE groundswell is running, Joaquina on the island's east side offers more defined sandbars and longer rides.
