Ferrugem's super-consistent beachbreak is Santa Catarina's most reliable wave, sitting 2km south of Garopaba and picking up virtually every swell on offer. NE swell lights up long lefts at the northeast end of the beach, while SE and S groundswell pushes rights off the rocks at the south end, with rip bowls forming across the middle. Low to mid tide is optimal, and NW offshore winds clean it up. The wave suits all levels when small, but the south end closes out above overhead, so intermediate and advanced surfers should focus on the NE peak as size builds. Localism ranges from mellow to sharp depending on conditions. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round, best fall and winter (April-September). Consistency: high. Expect brownish river runoff that gives the beach its name, Rust Beach, and gets worse after rain.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The best peak draws heavy crowds, especially on weekends when the lineup becomes ultra-crowded. Localism exists and can flare up on the best days. Spread out: the rip bowls mid-beach and the south-end rocks offer alternatives. Dawn patrol or mid-week sessions dramatically reduce the pressure.

Access & Facilities

Easy to find with road signs from Garopaba, 2km down the road. There is a car park on site and camping nearby. Food and water are available in Garopaba. Drive carefully on the approach road. River runoff impacts water quality, particularly after rain.

Nearby Alternatives

When Ferrugem is maxed out or mobbed, Silveira to the north delivers a quality right point that handles more size with cleaner shape. Praia da Barra is right around the corner for another option, though the river runoff there can also be a factor. Further south, Imbituba holds some of the heaviest waves in Brazil for those chasing serious size.
