Cardoso Beach delivers powerful, long-walled beach break peaks at the southern tip of Santa Catarina's Farol de Santa Marta cape, roughly 500m from the lighthouse itself. S and SE swells are the fuel here, ideally combined with a calm or N offshore wind at medium tide. The break starts showing shape from chest-high and scales up to legitimate 12-20ft face surf, with an established channel on bigger days giving paddlers a fighting chance. Intermediates can work the smaller days freely, while advanced surfers own the lineup when size pushes toward triple overhead. Bottom: sand. Season: fall and winter peak, though it breaks year-round. Consistency: reliable with good S swell fetch. One honest heads-up: between May and June, traditional Tainha fishing can result in surf restrictions, so check local rules before you travel.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are quiet with a mellow, welcoming vibe across the lineup. Weekends draw more crew, especially in the small-to-medium range, but localism is minimal. The spread of peaks means sharing happens naturally. Respect the Tainha fishing restrictions in May and June without argument.

Access & Facilities

Reach the cape via ferry from Laguna, then roughly 25km of rough road. A 4x4 is strongly recommended, not optional. Services at the cape are limited so bring water, food, and any spare leashes. The area clusters seven beaches around the cape, offering multiple options if Cardoso closes out.

Nearby Alternatives

North of Cardoso, Prainha do Farol picks up N and E swells with a S wind, useful when the main beach is blown out. Galheta, Ipoa, and Santa Marta beaches are all within striking distance and share similar sand-bottom character. South toward Jaguaruna, Camacho and Cigana beaches offer additional options when the swell is large and the cape is maxed.
