Folly Beach's best-known break delivers wedgy, punchy peaks across a multi-block stretch of jettied beachbreak just south of Charleston, SC. NE swells and late-summer hurricane pulses produce the most power, with S, SE, and E swells filling in the rest of the year. Mid to high tide keeps the banks from draining out, and N or NW winds groom the faces cleanly. At waist-to-overhead, it suits everyone from learners to competent shortboarders, above head-high it gets fast, slammy, and selective. Bottom: sand over rip-rap and groins. Season: late summer, early fall, early spring. Consistency: the most reliable break in South Carolina, but still fickle by most standards. Pack a wetsuit for winter, when water drops to around 7-8°C, and watch for hard rip currents on NE and SW wind days. Recent beach re-nourishment has shifted the sandbars, so expect the lineup to keep evolving.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends in any decent swell turn the Washout into a circus, and the beach itself becomes a spectator scene. Locals have been surfing here for decades, know every sandbar shift, and will assert priority. Localism is manageable but real: surf with control and give respect. Weekday dawn patrol in shoulder season cuts the crowd dramatically.

Access & Facilities

Head south from Charleston on Hwy 17, then take Hwy 171 toward Folly Beach. McKevlin's Surf Shop is a useful stop for wax and current conditions. Paid parking fills fast on weekends in summer. Some street parking exists along the beach road. Water quality is generally clean, with runoff concerns after heavy rain. Watch for soft sand parking without 4WD.

Nearby Alternatives

Folly Beach's other jetty peaks offer similar beachbreak options when the Washout is maxed out or impossibly crowded. During flat spells, the rest of the South Carolina coast doesn't offer much relief, so a road trip north toward the Outer Banks of North Carolina is worth considering when a real swell fills in.
