A long, exposed beachbreak in Hunting Island State Park, South Carolina, where the subtropical forest is literally being swallowed by the sea at high tide. NE to SE swells feed walled peaks that can barrel briefly when a W or NW wind is blowing offshore. Tidal range here runs six-plus feet, so timing matters: incoming to high is when the banks organize and the peaks clean up. Beginners and longboarders can find mellower inside sections while more experienced surfers work the punchier peaks near the lighthouse area, where the best banks tend to set up. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer, early fall, and early spring. Consistency: medium. The erosion is real and dramatic, with submerged tree stumps lurking beneath the surface, so survey the lineup before paddling out and watch for strong rip currents at each end of the island.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is one of the least crowded stretches of coast in South Carolina. The vibe is welcoming, and the lineup rarely fills up. State park access and camping keep the crowd a healthy mix of travelers, families, and occasional dedicated surfers rather than a tight local crew.

Access & Facilities

Reach the park from Beaufort via Highway 21, a straightforward drive through lowcountry marshland. Paved parking, restrooms, and a well-regarded campsite make this a legitimate surf-trip basecamp. The water runs cloudy but generally clean. Watch submerged stumps and floating debris, which are byproducts of the ongoing erosion.

Nearby Alternatives

Fripp Island sits just south and offers similar beachbreak setups worth checking on the same swell. For more consistent and organized surf on SE or S swells, the breaks around Folly Beach to the north provide better-defined peaks and a wider range of banks.
