The south side of Folly Beach Pier is the most consistent surf setup in southern South Carolina, producing occasional long lefts on NE swells that separate it from the flat beachbreaks up the coast. NE through S swells are the target window, with E and SE both working well. NW or N winds groom it cleanly. Mid tide incoming is the sweet spot: peaks steepen and hollow out, occasionally barreling on the right swell. Low tide closes out above 4ft, and dead high tide tends to mush everything out. It handles from knee-high to just overhead before falling apart. All skill levels are welcome, and the crowd is moderate but generally mellow compared to nearby Washout. Bottom: sand. Season: September to December. Consistency: medium. Restrictions are strict in summer: no surfing within 200ft of the pier, and a 10am to 6pm no-surf window applies, so dawn patrol is your only window those months.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The pier draws a mixed crowd of longboarders, funboarders, and shortboarders. Locals are generally welcoming compared to Washout, where the vibe is considerably sharper. That said, the southern hospitality thins out the closer you surf to the pier itself. Respect the no-surf zones around the pier and keep an eye on angry fishermen above.

Access & Facilities

Paid parking lot at the beach end of Folly Road. Restrooms on-site. Water quality is fair: stormwater runoff, jet-ski traffic, and pier runoff are all factors, though the spot historically passes water quality tests. Watch for jellyfish and the occasional shark report.

Nearby Alternatives

When Folly Pier is too small or too crowded, the Washout (southeast end of Folly Beach) picks up more swell and offers more powerful, performance-oriented waves, though the local vibe is considerably heavier. Further up the coast, Myrtle Beach spots require larger S or SE swells to wake up.
