The best wave on the Grand Strand breaks around a South Carolina pier, delivering short, punchy beach-break peaks on the right swell. NE to SE swells in the 3-8ft range are the target window, with mid to high tide keeping things cleaner and preventing the banks from going flat. Offshore winds from the W to NW help groom the face, though the wave can turn sloppy quickly when conditions deteriorate. The crowd picture is split: weekdays see a manageable lineup of talented locals and longboarders, while weekends on a good swell can turn the water into a circus. Bottom: sand. Season: fall through early spring for the most consistent swell. Consistency: low to moderate, this stretch struggles to pick up swell compared to Folly Beach or Pawleys Island to the south. Bull sharks are a documented hazard near the pier, and surfing too close to the structure can draw a ticket from local law enforcement, so give the pilings a wide berth.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends on swell can be genuinely overwhelming. Locals here are skilled and territorial, particularly the tight-knit crew who surf the spot daily. Summer months bring a heavy influx of vacationers, which elevates tension considerably. Standard protocols apply: wait your turn, no drop-ins, and arrive with humility. Weekday dawn patrol is the safest bet for a respectful session.

Access & Facilities

Head south from Myrtle Beach on Hwy 17 Bypass S, turn onto Atlantic Avenue at the Circle K, and drive straight to the pier. Parking is available on the south side. The Village surf shop in Garden City is the local knowledge hub and worth a visit for conditions, gear, and advice before paddling out. Nearby food options in Murrells Inlet are solid.

Nearby Alternatives

When Garden City is struggling to pick up swell, Pawleys Island to the south and Folly Beach further down the coast both catch more consistent energy from the Atlantic. Carolina Beach in North Carolina is another option worth the drive on bigger swells.
