A punchy, sand-bottom beach break on Sullivan's Island that detonates next to the shipping channel, drawing deep-water energy into short, fast peaks with genuine barrel potential. It needs NE or E windswell to fire, and when a NE wind has been howling for 24-48 hours, the peak in front of the bar delivers ledgy, hollow drops that demand a quick response. N and NW winds go offshore here, and the setup occasionally stays clean when everything else on the Charleston coast is blown out. Waist-to-overhead is the sweet spot, bigger swells amplify a mean north-to-south current that makes paddle-out positioning a constant fight. Suits intermediates and up on any real swell, beginners in the smaller end of the range only. Bottom: Sand. Season: Late summer, early fall, early spring. Consistency: Low, flat roughly 70% of the time and dependent on shoaling cooperating. Low tide dumps hard on the beach, so plan arrivals around mid to high.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowd is moderate when it's actually breaking, which is rare enough that heavy localism isn't a daily issue. forecast services notes the vibe can go heavy at Bert's, so read the lineup before paddling out on the good days. Welcoming when it's average, protective when it's firing.

Access & Facilities

Sullivan's Island has ample parking though it fills fast in summer and on big NE swells. Bert's Bar is the landmark. Water quality runs clean except after heavy rain events when runoff enters the system. Watch the rip: it reads calm from the beach but runs hard from the water.

Nearby Alternatives

If Bert's is flat or the current is unmanageable, Isle of Palms to the north picks up more swell and has a more forgiving beach break spread across a longer stretch of coast. The Washout area also catches NE energy and is a fallback when Sullivan's isn't cooperating.
