A reliable beachbreak on South Carolina's Grand Strand, 10th Street throws up punchy A-frame peaks around buried groins that shape the sandbars at most tides. Best on S, SE, E, or NE swell in the 2-8ft range with a NW wind cleaning things up offshore. Mid to high tide generally produces the better form and longer walls, while lower tides can hollow things out fast. Compared to nearby Washout, expect a slightly smaller, less hectic lineup that occasionally breaks further outside with cleaner lines. Bottom is sand, though buried rip-rap and groins lurk close to the peaks. Season runs late summer through early fall and into spring, with the highest consistency during hurricane swell windows. After heavy rain, stormwater runoff degrades water quality noticeably, so check conditions before paddling out. Bring a fish or shortboard for the punchier days, a longboard when it's small and mushy, and watch for rip currents on hard NE or SW wind swells.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The vibe here is welcoming and the crowd generally mellower than nearby Washout. Intermediate surfers make up the bulk of the lineup on good days. Busy summer weekends bring more bodies to the water, so dawn patrol during peak season is worth the early alarm. Localism is minimal, but standard lineup etiquette applies.

Access & Facilities

Free parking is the main draw for access. No facilities on-site, so bring water and sunscreen. Rip-rap and buried groins near the peaks are the primary hazard, along with the usual assortment of sea creatures. Steer clear after significant rainfall due to stormwater runoff.

Nearby Alternatives

When 10th Street is flat or blown out, the Washout handles similar swells with more consistent power but heavier crowds. Folly Beach's other peaks offer additional options along the same stretch of coast when swell direction shifts.
