A shorebreak pier setup on the southern end of Myrtle Beach's resort strip, Springmaid delivers punchy peaks that shift from lefts to rights depending on swell angle. SE and S swells are the sweet spot, producing fast, steep walls that can close out quickly given the sandbars have flattened considerably since major storms cleared them out. Offshore winds from the NW keep faces clean. Most tides work, though lower stages tend to organize the banks better and reduce the close-out tendency. Crowds build hard in summer, and a 300ft distance-from-pier law is enforced during peak season, compressing the usable lineup. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round with summer hurricane swells delivering the best energy. Consistency: medium. Water quality is a real concern here, with stormwater outflow and estuary input regularly affecting the lineup after rainfall. Check local water quality reports before paddling out after any significant rain event.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Summer crowds are heavy, driven by the resort beach location and easy access. The pier law keeps lineups compressed during peak months. Dawn patrol is the most reliable way to find open water. Localism is low-key, but sheer numbers of beginners and tourists make the water busy and unpredictable.

Access & Facilities

Camping is available nearby at Myrtle Beach State Recreation Park just north of the break. Note that ongoing beachfront hotel and condo development may alter access points as construction progresses. No dedicated parking is noted, so factor in street options or the state park lot.

Nearby Alternatives

Myrtle Beach State Park to the north has more sheltered banks and is worth checking on the same swell. When south swells pump bigger, spots further down toward the South Carolina border that take more size will handle the energy better.
