A sandspit right at the south end of Pawley's Island fires on E and SE swells, throwing up hollow sections at low tide that attract the area's sharpest surfers when it's on. Best size runs waist to overhead, and the wave can wall up nicely with W or NW offshores cleaning the face. It's fickle by nature, so timing matters: late summer and early fall deliver the most consistent SE groundswell, with early spring offering secondary windows. Moderate crowds on average, but on a good swell the lineup pulls the area's best and competition for peaks gets real. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer, early fall, early spring. Consistency: fickle, swell-dependent. Shark activity here is higher than average for the Carolina coast, so stay alert, especially near the inlet where baitfish concentrate and rips run hard on outgoing tide.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineuup is moderate most sessions, but when a legitimate SE swell hits, the area's core surfers show up and the vibe tightens. Humility and respect go a long way here. Don't drop in on locals. If you're new to the spot, read the pecking order before paddling into the main peak.

Access & Facilities

Park at the south end of Pawley's Island. Public access is plentiful, but summer weekends fill the lot early so arrive before 8am. Water quality is generally clean with occasional runoff pollution after heavy rain. Watch the rip current on outgoing tide near the spit tip.

Nearby Alternatives

When the sandspit isn't cooperating, the north end of Pawley's Island picks up more direct NE swell exposure and offers beach break peaks worth checking. Murrells Inlet area has scattered sand bottoms that can handle a wider swell window on smaller days.
