A wide sandbar setup on Isle of Palms that favors longboards and funboards, centered on the pier's north peak and the Windjammer bar to the south. S, SE, E, and NE swells all fire here, with W or NW offshores cleaning things up. Best at mid to high tide in the waist-to-overhead range, when the sandbars have enough push to produce workable lefts and rights. The wide, forgiving takeoff zones suit all skill levels, though the pier peak draws a regular crowd when any swell shows, so expect company. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer, early fall, early spring. Consistency: moderate. Arrive early on good days, especially in summer when parking and the lineup both fill fast, and be aware that post-rain runoff can affect water quality briefly.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The pier concentrates surfers and fishermen into a tight zone, so crowds build quickly when swells appear. Locals are generally welcoming as long as you're polite and respect the lineup rotation. The heavier sessions happen directly at the pier and Windjammer during any decent swell. A relaxed attitude goes further than positioning here.

Access & Facilities

Parking is plentiful year-round but fills fast on summer weekends. The Windjammer bar is steps from the water, making post-session logistics easy. Watch for cranky pier fishermen whose lines can cross the lineup, and mind the occasional jellyfish or other sea life. Water is generally clean, avoid the lineup for a day or two after heavy rainfall due to runoff.

Nearby Alternatives

If the pier is blown out or overcrowded, check the sandbars further down the Isle of Palms beachfront for a quieter peak on the same swell. Sullivan's Island, just to the south, offers similar beach break conditions and can hold a cleaner shape when wind direction shifts.
