A low-consistency beachbreak that earns its keep on the right swell, The Pier sits along the South Carolina Grand Strand near Pawleys Island, where the continental shelf swallows most swell energy before it reaches shore. SE swells, particularly tropical systems and hurricane groundswell, are the ticket here, producing long, workable lefts off the south side of the pier structure. NE swells can also fire the place up when offshore W or NW winds cooperate. Mid to incoming tide is the only window worth paddling out for. The wave shuts down past a foot or two overhead, so this is not a big-wave venue. Beginner to advanced surfers can find something here, though crowds build fast in summer when any surf shows up. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer and fall peak, but winter frontal swells also deliver. Consistency: low-to-moderate overall, better than most spots in this stretch of coast.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup etiquette is straightforward: rude behavior gets rude responses, but respectful surfers are generally treated well. Summer crowds can be a factor when surf is present, so dawn patrol or weekday sessions help. Outside peak season the lineup thins out considerably.

Access & Facilities

Parking is abundant. Public beach access is plentiful along this stretch. The pier structure itself defines the takeoff zones, so orient relative to the south side for the better lefts. Sand sharks and bluefish are present but attacks are rare. Water quality is generally clean.

Nearby Alternatives

When The Pier is flat or blown out, the broader Pawleys Island and Myrtle Beach stretches hold dozens of exposed beach peaks that respond to the same swell windows. Shifting a few blocks north or south along the beach can sometimes turn up a cleaner sandbar on the same swell.
