A sheltered beach break tucked into a recessed section of the South Carolina coast, North End at North Litchfield delivers waist-to-overhead peaks on S and SE swells with minimal crowd pressure. The recessed coastline cuts overall wave size, so expect surf here to run roughly a foot smaller than nearby Huntington Beach or Pawley's Island on the same swell. Best conditions come with a W or NW wind, mid to high tide, and a solid S or SE groundswell pushing in from late summer through early fall or early spring. Wide, uncrowded beaches and a welcoming atmosphere make this a low-stress session for surfers of any level, though the marginal consistency means experienced surfers should temper expectations. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer, early fall, early spring. Consistency: low to moderate. Check Huntington or Pawley's Island first on smaller swells and save North End for when the swell is pumping and you want space in the lineup.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

One of the mellower lineups on this stretch of coast. Localism is essentially nonexistent, and the wide beach disperses whoever does show up. Dawn patrol is rarely necessary here but will get you the cleanest conditions before onshore winds build.

Access & Facilities

Abundant public beach access along the North Litchfield residential area. Easy parking with no significant walk to the water. After heavy rain, runoff can affect water quality, so check conditions before paddling out. Watch for the usual Lowcountry marine life, including stingrays, shuffling your feet through the shallows.

Nearby Alternatives

When North End is too small, Huntington Beach State Park and Pawley's Island typically run a head taller on the same swell and offer more defined sandbars. Both are within a short drive and worth checking first on marginal swell days.
