Cherry Grove Pier anchors the quietest corner of the Myrtle Beach stretch, sitting near the North Carolina state line where sandbars shift at the end of every block and south-swell energy arrives with a little more push than spots further south. S and SE swells are the go-to, best from waist to overhead, with N and NW winds cleaning up the face. NE wind runs side-offshore here, which is a useful card when the rest of the coast looks blown out. Mid to high tide fills in the sandbars and keeps sections from shutting down too fast. All skill levels can find something, and crowds stay light on weekdays and weekends alike. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer, early fall, early spring. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Surfing within 300ft of the pier gives you the best bars, but local enforcement does issue fines, so read the posted signs and keep a respectful buffer from fishermen.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

One of the more welcoming lineups on the South Carolina coast. Crowds stay thin most of the week and even weekends see only a handful of surfers. Localism is minimal. The main source of friction is the pier, where fishermen have priority and patience for surfers runs short. Stay clear of active fishing lines.

Access & Facilities

Free parking throughout North Myrtle Beach makes this an easy stop. The paddle-out is straightforward. Water quality is generally clean, though runoff after heavy rain can affect conditions close to storm drains. Pack water and food from town, facilities are limited beachside. The historic tiger shark catch is local lore but the species does frequent these waters.

Nearby Alternatives

If Cherry Grove is flat or onshore, the sandbars running south through North Myrtle Beach offer similar beach break options with only minor variation. On stronger NE swell events, spots further south toward central Myrtle Beach can pick up more size.
