A remote wilderness beachbreak on a seven-mile barrier island north of Charleston, Bull Island rewards the effort of getting there with a completely empty lineup and genuine swell exposure. Accessible only by boat from the Awendaw launch, the island faces S and SE swells openly, and funnels N and NE windswells to Boneyard Beach at the north end. Best winds are W, NW, and N. Size runs waist to overhead on a good day, and during hurricane season it can be one of the biggest beachbreaks in South Carolina with zero other surfers out. Tide matters: work low to mid at the island's ends and mid to high at the central beachbreak sections. Intermediate to advanced surfers are the right fit here. Getting hurt this far from help is a genuine problem, not a talking point. Bottom: sand with submerged tree debris. Season: late summer, early fall, early spring. Consistency: swell-dependent, low to moderate outside storm season. Bring a leash you trust and check the current before paddling near the inlets.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

There is no crowd here in any practical sense. The boat-access barrier filters out almost everyone. The lineup is yours. No localism to speak of, but no backup either: if something goes wrong in the water, the nearest help is across a stretch of open water.

Access & Facilities

Boat launch at Awendaw is the only entry point. Cross the island on foot via the main trail to reach the beach. Seven miles of shoreline means you can spread out and look for the best-breaking bars. No camping permitted on the island. Bring all your own water, food, and first aid. Nearest services are back on the mainland. Water is generally clean but typically cloudy.

Nearby Alternatives

When Bull Island is flat or the boat logistics don't work out, the Charleston-area beachbreaks at Folly Beach and Isle of Palms pick up similar S and SE swells with far easier access. Sullivan's Island also catches NE windswells and is a quick drive from the city.
