A proper shorebreak barrel tucked behind Cape May's south-facing shoreline, The Cove punches well above its weight when NE swells wrap around the point and the rest of New Jersey is buried in onshore slop. It handles a wide swell window from NE through SE, with E and ESE being the sweet spot, and the sand bars here get a consistent recharge from beach nourishment programs that keep the bottom dredged and pumping. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find the most to work with, though the welcoming vibe keeps the lineup from turning hostile even on busy weekend sessions. Bottom: sand off rock jetty. Season: September through March. Consistency: moderate, with the best days arriving when storm swell wraps the cape. On a firing day, three below-sea-level lefts on a single wave is genuinely achievable, so come with a shortboard and zero expectations of a relaxed paddle-out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Moderate crowds on good days, though the local vibe is notably welcoming. It will get busy when conditions align in winter, but the atmosphere stays reasonable. Respect the lineup, read the current before paddling out, and you will be fine. Dawn patrol in September and October consistently delivers the best combination of quality and breathing room.

Access & Facilities

Easy road access south of Broadway Beach in Cape May. The tricky element here is the current, which can move fast alongside the jetty, so read the water before committing to your entry point. Broadway Beach and other Cape May options are close if the Cove is not cooperating.

Nearby Alternatives

Broadway Beach just to the north catches similar swells with a slightly more forgiving setup for off-days. When south swells dominate and The Cove goes flat, the Delaware Bay side of the cape can occasionally produce rideable runners worth checking.
