Long Beach Island's surf history runs deep, and Ship Bottom sits in the middle of this 18-mile sand barrier as a reliable read on whatever the Atlantic is sending. Works on almost any swell the ocean throws at it, from S through ENE, but a shorter-to-mid period combo swell paired with NW winds is when LBI genuinely fires. Low-to-mid tide suits average swells, push toward mid-high on bigger days. Beach replenishment projects have buried most of the jetties and groins that once shaped consistent banks, so quality varies and the handful of remaining good sandbars draw crowds fast. Bottom: Sand. Season: September through March. Consistency: Wide swell window but sandbar-dependent. Check conditions early and be ready to hunt up or down the island if Ship Bottom's banks aren't connecting.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are moderate and the vibe is welcoming by New Jersey standards. Summer draws all levels and packs the lineup, while winter thins things out considerably. The remaining quality sandbars on the island concentrate surfers, so even on mid-season weekdays expect company at the better peaks. Dawn patrol significantly reduces pressure.

Access & Facilities

Street parking is hit-or-miss depending on which town you're in along the island. Beach access points are plentiful across LBI. Watch for shallow bottom sections, rip currents, and occasional wildlife. Water quality is generally clean.

Nearby Alternatives

If Ship Bottom's banks are blown out or flat, run the island north toward Barnegat Light or south toward Beach Haven, where different sand configurations may be working. Harvey Cedars and Surf City offer additional peaks along the same barrier island when hunting for shape.
