A beach break wedge on the north side of the old Margate Pier, this New Jersey shore spot punches above its modest reputation on the right day. It needs a solid E to SE swell in the 3-5ft range to start showing its teeth, with NW or W winds keeping faces clean. Mid to high tide generally fills in the sandbars and produces the hollower, faster sections this spot is capable of. Crowds thin out midweek, but weekends in summer pull the full Jersey Shore circus, so dawn patrol is the only real answer. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer through fall for hurricane and nor'easter groundswells. Consistency: moderate. The pier structure itself influences the break, so shifting sandbars mean the peak moves around seasonally. Bring a versatile shortboard or a fish on smaller days, and keep an eye on the rip currents that funnel along the pier pilings, especially on bigger swells.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Midweek it's a relaxed crew, mostly locals and regulars who grew up here. Weekends in summer get genuinely packed with mixed ability surfers, bodyboarders, and swimmers. Localism is not heavy, but the vibe skews toward a neighborhood beach where regulars know each other. Dawn patrol keeps you ahead of the crowds.

Access & Facilities

From Atlantic Avenue, turn onto Essex Ave and follow it toward the water. Street parking fills fast on weekends, arrive early or expect a walk. The broader Margate area has food, water, and conveniences close by. Watch the rip currents along the pier structure, especially when swells are overhead or bigger.

Nearby Alternatives

When Margate Pier is flat or maxed out, Ventnor Beach to the south picks up a similar swell and offers more open beach break options. Atlantic City's north side jetties are a short drive and can hold bigger swells with more defined shape.
