One of the only true pointbreaks in New Jersey, Sandy Hook's Cove is an artificial right-hander shaped by erosion-control jetties inside Gateway National Recreation Area. It needs a solid SE, ESE, or E swell to fire, with W or WSW winds keeping it clean, and works best at low-to-mid tide from chest-high to overhead. Intermediate through advanced surfers will get the most out of it, though skilled longboarders and fish riders can enjoy smaller days. Crowds are moderate on weekdays and heavy on weekends when conditions align. Bottom: sand. Season: September through March, with late summer and early fall tropical swells producing the best runs. Get there at dawn on a good swell: by mid-morning the lot fills, the lineup stacks up, and tempers can shorten. Note that surf fishermen also work this stretch and are not always welcoming to surfers in the water, so read the situation before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends with good surf draw heavy crowds. Aggression exists but is manageable, especially as size increases and only the more committed surfers remain. A few locals hold down priority at the main peak, so respect the pecking order, wait your turn, and the vibe stays doable.

Access & Facilities

Exit 117 on the Garden State Parkway, then follow signs into Sandy Hook. A national park entry fee is charged at the gate. Parking, restrooms, and seasonal facilities are available within the recreation area. Rangers patrol the park, so observe posted rules.

Nearby Alternatives

A jetty immediately south of The Cove offers a shorter but often less crowded option when the main peak gets hectic. Brighton Avenue jetty and Beachcombers both pick up S swells with hollower, faster sections. The Long Branch jetties and Seven Presidents Park can work on E swells when conditions spread across the county.
