A jetty-assisted left at the edge of Cape May that needs real swell to deliver, Stockton Avenue rewards patience on E to SE groundswells from chest-high to well overhead. North winds clean it up, mid tide is the sweet spot, and the rock jetty that defines the break also creates the submerged pilings you need to know about before you paddle out. This used to be the most consistent wave in town, but beach replenishment has made the sandbars unreliable, so checking conditions before driving is non-negotiable. Beach tags are enforced hard in summer and the walk-up crowd thins the lineup considerably in the off-season. Bottom: Sand over jetty structure. Season: September through March. Consistency: Hit-or-miss post-replenishment. Bring a fish or a mid-length on smaller E swells and save the shortboard for when it's actually head-high or above.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism here is manageable. The lineup runs light to moderate most of the year. Summer sees more bodies in the water, but the beach-tag enforcement keeps casual traffic in check. Off-season you may have it largely to yourself. Standard respect rules apply: don't snake sets, communicate in the lineup, and know the right-of-way.

Access & Facilities

Easy street access year-round, though summer parking and beach-tag requirements add friction. Restrooms and food are nearby in Cape May proper. Water quality runs clean. The main hazard is submerged pilings near the jetty base: know where they sit before committing to a close-out section.

Nearby Alternatives

When Stockton is flat or the sandbars are blown out, the rest of Cape May's beachbreaks can pick up the same E swell. Further north along the Jersey Shore, swell-exposed beaches fire more consistently when a proper nor'easter fills in.
