A punchy, barreling beach break where groins and jetties lock in shifting sandbars along Ocean City's northern blocks, producing genuine hollow waves across a wide swell window. SSE through ENE swell hits the groin structures differently: rights peel off the north sides during S swell, lefts spin off the south sides on N swell, and wedgy A-frames form in between when the sand lines up. Mid to high tide is the sweet spot, and once it gets overhead the shorebreak thickens fast. Best September through March when crowds thin and the swell window opens. Bottom: sand. Season: fall through early spring. Consistency: reliable when swell exists. Pack a quiver because this wave eats boards. Learn to read the rip currents that form around the groins on bigger days and use them to your advantage in the paddle-out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Moderate most of the year, but expect a packed lineup during any solid tropical swell. Summer adds beginner and tourist traffic to the water, diluting the skill level significantly. Localism is generally manageable but can sharpen on good days. Dawn patrol during fall swells is the practical move to find quality waves without the friction.

Access & Facilities

Straightforward beach access from the 1st Street area. Beach badges are required in summer, so budget for that or arrive early morning before enforcement. Parking is available nearby but fills quickly on good days. Avoid surfing within 48 hours of heavy rain due to runoff affecting water quality. Watch the groins at all times, especially on the paddle-out.

Nearby Alternatives

Ocean City has multiple groin setups running down the island, so if the north end is shutting down or maxed out, working south along the beach often reveals a different sand setup catching the swell better. Further afield, the inlets at Corson's Inlet State Park or the beaches along Long Beach Island offer different exposure and less crowd pressure on the same swells.
