A jetty-influenced beach break on the northern Jersey Shore, Deal punches well above its size when NE swells hit the breakwater and stack into hollow, powerful peaks across a wide sand bottom. Offshore winds from the SW clean things up fast, and low-to-mid tide is the window to chase, when the wave face steepens and the lefts and rights both open up. On a modest 3-5ft NE groundswell the break is manageable for intermediates, when a proper hurricane swell pushes through, faces can stack to 15ft and the wave becomes a different animal entirely, demanding real experience and a solid duck-dive. Bottom: sand with jetty influence. Season: late summer through fall, peaking in hurricane season. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Crowds are light midweek but the weekends draw a competitive lineup, and there is a resident longboard contingent that knows this wave better than you do.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Midweek you can find a relaxed, sparse lineup. Weekends bring a crowd, and the local contingent is established and territorial on better swells. Go early, read the pecking order before paddling into the peak, and earn your sets. Respect goes a long way here.

Access & Facilities

Ocean Avenue runs the length of this stretch of coast and provides the main access corridor. Swimming without a floatation device is prohibited in the area, so your board doubles as your entry ticket. No elaborate hike required. Bring water and supplies as facilities near the break are minimal. Watch for strong rip currents on bigger swells near the jetty structure.

Nearby Alternatives

Allenhurst and Loch Arbor sit just a few minutes north and can pick up similar swell with a slightly different character, suiting bodyboarders and beginner-to-intermediate surfers on smaller days. When Deal is maxed out or too crowded, those stretches offer a lower-pressure option.
