Broadway Beach earns its reputation as the most varied break in Long Branch, New Jersey, serving up a consistently good jetty-assisted left as its main event alongside wedgy rights and lined-up lefts scattered across the beach on any decent swell. NE to SE swell is the target window, with NNW winds pushing offshore. Mid to high tide is generally the call, and the wave performs best in the waist-high to well-overhead range. It suits everyone from beginners finding their feet on the beach peaks to experienced surfers hunting the jetty left during a nor'easter, though crowds scale up hard when size arrives. Bottom: sand. Season: September through March. Consistency: moderate to reliable when swell is running. Beach tags are required outside of surf hours, and summer daylight surfing is banned, so the shoulder months are where you want to be for unrestricted water time.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is mellow to moderate, described as doable, but crowds are the real issue. On a big nor'easter or hurricane swell, 100 to 150 surfers can pack the lineup when neighboring breaks are unrideable. Spring, summer, and fall see the heaviest numbers. Dawn patrol in the off-season gives you the best chance at uncrowded sets.

Access & Facilities

Access is easy year-round but tightest in summer due to beach tags, lifeguard restrictions, and general tourist pressure. Surfing is prohibited during daytime hours in summer. Bodyboarders have unrestricted all-day access in summer. Rip currents are a real hazard, particularly when swell picks up around the jetty. Water quality is generally clean.

Nearby Alternatives

When Broadway is maxed out and the crowd is unmanageable, other Long Branch and Monmouth County beach breaks up and down the Jersey Shore offer similar sand-bottom peaks with less pressure. During large northeast swells, check beaches north and south for sandbars that may be holding cleaner shape.
