Bay Head's jetties funnel south swells into fast, hollow rights that rank among New Jersey's best tube-riding opportunities. Located on the northern Ocean County coast, the break fires on S, SSE, and SE swell with a W wind keeping faces clean. Low-to-mid tide is generally best, when sandbars behind the short jetties stack up and throw. Size range runs waist-high to double overhead, with the bigger south swells and hurricane pulses producing the standout sessions. Intermediate surfers can work it on smaller days, but the shallowest, most powerful conditions are advanced territory. Bottom: sand over jetty structure. Season: September through March, peaking Aug-Nov. Consistency: high. Come prepared for a heavy crowd on any south swell, and expect a lineup that does not welcome drop-ins or outsiders who haven't paid their dues.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds have grown significantly and the local vibe is legitimately intimidating. Forecasts rate both crowd pressure and localism at 8 out of 10. On any solid south swell, expect a packed, territorial lineup. Dawn patrol and midweek sessions reduce friction. Respect priority, don't snake, and keep your head down until you've earned your space.

Access & Facilities

Free roadside parking is available but fills fast in summer. Access to the water is straightforward once you've found a spot. A lifeguard is present during summer hours. Note the 10am-5pm surfing restrictions during summer months. The residential neighborhood is tight-knit and protective of its beach. Shallow sandbars, groins, and crowd pressure are the main hazards.

Nearby Alternatives

Manasquan Inlet to the north works on NE and E swells when Bay Head is too S-swell dependent. Sea Girt, just south, offers consistent jetty peaks around New York Blvd and can absorb overflow crowds. Spring Lake and Belmar both have active lineups worth checking when Bay Head is maxed or too crowded to function.
