A hollow A-frame barreling peak sheltered under Chapman's Peak on the southern end of Noordhoek Beach, The Hoek fires when SW-W swell wraps into the bay and SE trade winds blow hard offshore. Works best at low to mid tide on swell from 3-6ft, with a sand-over-reef bottom that shifts seasonally. Summer (November to February) is peak season: the same SE gales that shut down exposed Cape Peninsula spots groom this one to perfection, drawing crowds of committed tube hunters. Skill demand is high. Late takeoffs into fast, short barrels with a bounce off the rocks dictate who gets waves and who gets held down. Bottom: sand over submerged reef. Season: November to February. Consistency: medium, banks-dependent. Bring a full wetsuit and booties, great white shark sightings are documented here and at nearby Dunes, and the upwelling makes the water genuinely cold even in summer.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This spot gets genuinely crowded when conditions align, particularly on summer weekends when it is one of the few working spots on the peninsula. A core group of locals knows exactly where to sit and will get their share. Localism is described as doable rather than heavy, but kook behavior will not be tolerated. Dawn patrol midweek is the move if you want breathing room.

Access & Facilities

Park at the Noordhoek car park and walk roughly 300m south along the beach toward Chapman's Peak. No facilities at the break. Bring water, food, and a full wetsuit, at least 4/3 with booties given the cold upwelling. Do not leave valuables visible in your car.

Nearby Alternatives

When The Hoek is blown out or the banks have gone, the 3.5km stretch of Noordhoek Beach holds variable peaks including Dunes, which can produce heavy barrels in moderate swell. Long Beach to the north picks up S swell and can offer cleaner lefts in N-NW wind conditions.
