A west-facing beachbreak near the Chapman River mouth on the outskirts of Geraldton, Western Australia, Sunset Beach delivers shifting peaks across a sandy bottom when westerly groundswell lines up. It works best on W to NW swell in the 2-5ft range with light easterly offshores keeping faces clean. S swell is largely blocked by the long peninsula to the south, so wave quality climbs noticeably when the swell swings west of southwest. The crowd skews beginner to intermediate on weekends, so expect company on any decent day. Bottom: sand. Season: April through September (Southern Hemisphere winter groundswell season). Consistency: medium. Check conditions early in the morning before the onshore sea breeze fills in from the west, which typically kills the surface by midday.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends draw a solid crowd given its proximity to Geraldton town. The lineup is predominantly local and skill levels are mixed. Respect in the water and a patient approach will keep interactions friendly. Dawn patrol mid-week is the clearest path to uncrowded peaks.

Access & Facilities

The beach sits roughly 5km off the North West Coastal Highway near Geraldton. No dedicated parking or facilities are noted at the spot itself. Geraldton town has full amenities including fuel, food, and surf supplies. Water quality is generally clean with no flagged pollution concerns.

Nearby Alternatives

When Sunset Beach is blown out or lacking swell, Back Beach down to Tarcoola in Geraldton catches similar conditions and is the default local beachbreak. Coronation, 5km off the highway to the north, offers fun and more reliable beachbreak peaks. South of Geraldton, Greenough has rivermouth peaks worth a check when conditions are marginal elsewhere.
