A long left-hand pointbreak on South Africa's West Coast, Elands Bay delivers hollow take-offs and cylindrical walls that run up to 150m into a beachbreak closeout section at the river mouth. SW and NW swells refract around the outer point, with the inside section the real prize: long walling lefts, barrel opportunities, and large open faces for turns. Best from head-high to double overhead, mid to high tide, with SE or S winds keeping it clean. Needs a solid swell to wrap around the point, roughly 8ft at Cape Town before Elands is genuinely firing. It suits intermediate to advanced surfers, but understand the crowd is heavy on weekends and localism is real. Bottom: reef. Season: March-October. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Parking has moved to the town-side lot, clearly signposted, so do not assume the old front-of-wave access still applies.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends draw a heavy Cape Town contingent alongside the tight local crew, many of whom have surfed here for decades. Localism is present and enforced quietly. Wait your turn, show patience, and you will get waves. Do not paddle around the queue or jockey for position on your first session.

Access & Facilities

Drive north from Cape Town along the West Coast road. Parking is now on the town side of the point and is signposted. Entry and exit off the rocks can be awkward depending on tide. The hotel above the campsite serves breakfast and runs the only bar in town. The area is small and primarily Afrikaans-speaking.

Nearby Alternatives

When Elands is too small or too crowded, the broader West Coast has scattered beach and reef options that absorb the same NW and SW swell windows. Cape Town's peninsula offers numerous alternatives if the drive back is warranted.
