A reliable beachbreak on the Cape Peninsula's southern tip, Long Beach at Kommetjie punches above its weight when SW wind and swell align. A permanent sandbar splits the peak into a consistent left that empties into a channel and a more variable right that occasionally fades toward a rocky section. Works best on SW swell from 4-6ft, stays clean when the northeaster blows offshore, and is best avoided at high tide unless size is up, as the bank goes too deep to break properly. Beginners and intermediates fill the lineup most sessions, and weekends bring significant crowds, especially when surf schools are running. Bottom: sand. Season: March to September. Consistency: high. Check the left first, it is the more predictable option, and kick out before the shorebreak on bigger days to avoid the rocky end section.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends at Kommetjie can get very crowded. Multiple surf schools operate here, which adds volume to the lineup on any decent swell day. Localism is low, but wave-sharing etiquette matters when it is busy. Dawn patrol mid-week sessions give the best ratio of waves to people.

Access & Facilities

Drive south along the Cape Peninsula to Kommetjie. Signage for Long Beach is visible on the approach. No formal parking area or facilities on site, so come self-sufficient with water and sunscreen. No significant pollution concerns, but watch the rip near the rocky southern end.

Nearby Alternatives

When Long Beach closes out in big SW swell, the more sheltered spots further up the peninsula toward Muizenberg can offer cleaner, smaller surf. Noordhoek also sits within range for a cross-check on conditions.
