A punchy left-hand reef on the Cape Peninsula's Atlantic seaboard, Stoney Beach sits within the Rocklands surf area near Sea Point and demands respect from the first paddle-out. SW swell is the engine here, ideally 4-8ft, with the SE trade wind cleaning up faces and making the wave genuinely surfable. Tide plays into the take-off zone: too low and the rocky ledge becomes an immediate problem, too high and the wave loses its punch. This is an advanced spot, full stop. The drop is committing, sections wall fast, and the rocky ledge waiting beneath adds consequence to every mistake. It draws a local crew who know the lineup well. Bottom: reef. Season: autumn and winter, April through September, when SW groundswells push up the coast. Consistency: moderate to good during swell season. Pack a helmet if you're wary of the ledge, and watch the current closely before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The Rocklands stretch around Sea Point carries a regular local contingent who surf here year-round. Stoney Beach is no exception. Give respect, read the pecking order, and don't hassle sets you haven't earned priority on. First sessions at dawn help with crowd pressure and light conditions tend to be cleaner early.

Access & Facilities

Sea Point is a short drive or ride from Cape Town's CBD. Parking is available along the Sea Point strip. Water quality can vary close to urban Cape Town, so check conditions after heavy rain. No dedicated surf facilities at the break itself, but Sea Point has cafes and convenience stores within easy walking distance.

Nearby Alternatives

When Stoney Beach is maxed out or too low-tide gnarly, other Rocklands peaks nearby can offer slightly more forgiving options depending on swell angle. If the Cape Peninsula's Atlantic side is blown out, the False Bay side, including spots around Muizenberg and further south, can provide shelter and a completely different wave experience.
