A raw, exposed beach-break wedged beneath the cliffs of Cape Point, Dias Beach delivers thick, mutant barrels that fire whenever everywhere else in Cape Town is flat. It catches swell from virtually every direction, making it a last-resort option when the rest of the peninsula has switched off. SW to SE swells push hollow rights close to the rock, with occasional lefts breaking off the same peak. Offshore winds from the north are ideal. Best from 2-6ft, though it holds bigger. The wave is short and ledgey, detonating fast over a rocky bottom with a powerful rip current that demands serious respect. Access requires entry into Cape Point Nature Reserve, followed by a stiff 30-minute downhill walk and an exhausting climb back up, often with a baboon gauntlet on the stairway. Do not carry food in your pack. Do not show your teeth to the animals. One tourist body-surfed here and was never recovered. The rip runs south toward Antarctica. Bottom: beach and rock. Season: year-round. Consistency: good when swell is up.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Nearly always empty. The access effort alone filters out most surfers. The crowd that does make it down is small, experienced, and self-selecting. Localism is not an issue, but attitude matters: this is not a beginner's playground and the few people here on any given day are there for serious reasons. Read the energy.

Access & Facilities

Paid entry to Cape Point Nature Reserve applies. The walk in is steep and rocky. The walk out is harder. Baboons congregate around the stairway and have blocked surfers from leaving. Do not carry food, do not feed them, do not smile at them. No facilities at the beach. No mobile signal. Come self-sufficient with water, a leash you trust, and someone who knows where you are.

Nearby Alternatives

When Cape Point is too big or the rip is running dangerously, the wider False Bay side offers more manageable options at Kalk Bay Reef or Muizenberg for mellow waves. On the Atlantic side, Long Beach in Kommetjie handles similar SW swell with far easier access.
