Outer Kom is a giant, lumbering left-hand reef that only starts showing at 8ft, breaking far out to sea on the Cape Peninsula's Atlantic flank. It needs a solid W swell and prefers NE or SE winds at mid-tide incoming to show its best form, producing long open-face drops that pitch into legitimate barrels on the bigger sets. Skill floor is high: the wave doesn't exist below 8ft, and outside sets have a reputation for catching entire lineups inside without warning. Bottom: deep reef. Season: shoulder months (spring and autumn) when corner winds align. Consistency: low to moderate, but memorable when it fires. Pack a gun, check the tide, and be ready to sprint-paddle. Inner Kom runs parallel as a shorter, zippering reef wave that groms and longboarders love, and The Ledge offers a quick barreling section between the kelp heads for those who want something in between.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Moderatley crowded on 6-8ft days with a strong local contingent, but the lineup runs reasonably orderly. When sets push past 10ft, numbers drop sharply and priority sorts itself out. Loads of locals know this wave intimately, so read the pecking order and earn your waves.

Access & Facilities

The paddle-out involves navigating thick kelp beds. The only exit is a rock-jump back into the same seaweed and a physical fight through it to open water. Budget extra energy for this. Shark sightings are documented here, a reminder that this is open Atlantic water. The village of Kommetjie has basics nearby.

Nearby Alternatives

When Outer Kom is too big or not breaking, Long Beach at Noordhoek handles similar SW swells and offers a more forgiving beach-break option a short drive away. Scarborough to the south is worth checking in cleaner SW conditions for a change of scenery.
