A fast, hollow beach break sitting directly below the Twelve Apostles mountain range, Camps Bay fires up on SW-NW swells that wrap into this west-facing Cape Peninsula bay. It needs a solid groundswell pushing 3ft or more to show its teeth, and when conditions align in the South African winter it delivers short, punchy barrels that move quickly and close out fast. The ride length is short, under 50m, so you're hunting for steep takeoffs rather than walls to carve. In small surf the wave is manageable for competent intermediates, but once the swell climbs above head-high the takeoffs steepen sharply and the wave becomes a serious commitment suited to experienced surfers comfortable in powerful shorebreak. Bottom: sand. Season: May through August. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. Dawn patrol in winter gives you the best chance of catching it uncrowded before the Cape Town tourist circuit wakes up.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays the lineup runs nearly empty. Weekends draw a handful of surfers, which stays manageable given the short, sectiony nature of the wave. No heavy localism reported, but the Cape Town surf community is tight and showing basic respect in the water goes a long way.

Access & Facilities

Camps Bay beach is straightforward to reach from Cape Town's Atlantic Seaboard, roughly 10 minutes from the city centre. Parking along the beachfront esplanade, with cafes, restaurants and facilities within walking distance. Water quality is generally good. Watch for shore dump on bigger swells and a strong sweep along the beach that can push you off the peak.

Nearby Alternatives

If Camps Bay is too small or blown out, Llandudno just a few kilometres south is a more sheltered reef and beach option that handles larger SW swell with more shape. Big Bay near Bloubergstrand to the north catches more consistent NW and SW swells and offers longer ride potential on smaller days.
