A wedging, slab-like shorebreak that doubles in size when SE-SW swell refracts off the rocks at the corner of Plettenberg Bay, The Wedge sits in the shadow of the Beacon Isle Hotel on the Southern Cape coast. Optimal conditions demand SE to SW swell wrapping into the bay, a NW offshore wind, and low to mid tide to produce the characteristic ledgey take-off. The refracted energy collides with incoming sets to manufacture a steep, hollow wave well beyond what the raw swell size suggests. This is expert-only territory: the wave air-drops onto dry sand, closes out without warning, and punishes miscalculated positioning. Bottom: beach and sand. Season: autumn and winter swells, May through August. Consistency: low, but spectacular on the right day. Dawn patrol maximises glassy conditions and slightly thinner crowds before the bodyboard crew assembles in force.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect a competitive, heavily bodyboard-dominated lineup. Weekends and school holidays push it to ultra-crowded. Local crew are territorial and have the awkward ledge take-off wired, including pushing off the rocks. Visitors who show patience, wait their turn, and respect the pecking order generally get waves. Those who don't tend to learn quickly. The bigger the swell, the more the crowd thins.

Access & Facilities

The wave breaks at the southern end of the main Plett beach, visible from the Beacon Isle Hotel. No dedicated parking or facilities at the break itself. Plettenberg Bay town is close for food, water, and accommodation. Watch for sand slammers on wipeouts and the shallow shorebreak at low tide.

Nearby Alternatives

When The Wedge is too big or blown out, Lookout Beach's shifty sandbars are a short walk north. Murphys reef and sand peak, a short drive away, is the region's most consistent option with punchy hollow lefts in most swells. Victoria Bay, roughly an hour west near George, offers a reliable right pointbreak when the Southern Cape swell machine is running.
