A winter-refuge beachbreak on the warmer Indian Ocean side of the Cape Peninsula, Betty's Bay sits roughly an hour's drive from Cape Town and earns its reputation during the bitter SA winter months. While most of the surrounding coastline is wrecked by the predominant SE wind, Betty's Bay flips the script: NW winds blow offshore here, and that's exactly what the region gets in winter. Best at waist-to-head high on a S swell, the beach throws up scattered rights and lefts across the sandbanks, with an A-frame section toward the right end and a longer left running alongside a rock pile further down the beach. Low to mid tide keeps the banks punchy, high tide tends to produce closeouts with inside reforms. A nearby left-hand reef is worth tracking down if you know the area. Bottom: Sand/mixed. Season: June to August. Consistency: Moderate. During summer the shore-break peaks can be fun for a boardies session when everywhere else is blown out, but manage your expectations on shark risk in this region.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup pressure is minimal. Betty's Bay's relative obscurity and the longer drive from Cape Town keep the crowds thin even on solid winter swells. Localism is essentially non-existent, welcoming to visiting surfers. Dawn patrol in winter means cold air and dark roads, but you'll likely have the water almost to yourself.

Access & Facilities

A tarred road through coastal fynbos leads to a gravel car park in front of a gap in the dunes. Walk over the dunes and you're on the beach. Public toilets exist but are reportedly grim. Bring your own water and snacks, facilities are minimal. Sharks are present in this stretch of coastline, great whites included. Sightings are rare but the risk is real. Exercise standard South African shark-awareness protocol.

Nearby Alternatives

When Betty's Bay is flat or blown out, the broader Cape Overberg coast has other beachbreaks and reef setups that activate on similar S and SW swells. Cape Town's False Bay spots are under an hour in the other direction and offer additional options on the same NW wind days.
